Longwood Gardens on a Cloudy Day

Every Day Can be a Good Day at Longwood

Just back from a trip to Arizona, we spent a few days catching up on yard work, planting flower beds, mowing, and tidying around the house.  On Monday afternoon we figured we'd earned a day of enjoyment.  It was cloudy, but the morning drizzle had cleared, and we figured on heading to Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA to catch the blooming tulips before they began to fade.

Needless to say we were not disappointed, as there were blooming beds of tulips just glowing in the light of the overcast skies.

We were particularly taken with the almost fluorescent orange varieties that seemed to almost scream for attention, as well as the delicately frilled varieties in a multitude of colors.

The light in the Conservatory begged the camera lens in every direction toward secret little pockets of color and form.

Even in this cold gray light the photography students were scattered everywhere around the grounds, leaning precariously here and there to frame just the right shot of a favored subject.

Around a bend in a woodland area a purple Trillium caught our eye, peeking out prominently amidst an expanse of whites.

We checked in on the progress of the fountain gardens, due to reopen in late May, and wandered further to the children's garden, which is a perfect spot to introduce young children to the joys of flowers and gardening.

As we write this in late April, the orchid displays have mostly disappeared as the staff works furiously to prepare the next season's feast for the eyes, the redbuds are blooming all across the property, and with the bell tower chiming in the distance we began wandering our way home, satiated and happy.
